Lake Aiguebelette

Lake Aiguebelette: a nature reserve 30 minutes from Camping La Bruyère

First of all, do you know the meaning of the name " Aiguebelette "? The term evokes the "Belles petites eaux". In any case, it reflects the tranquility and authentic beauty of the area.

Lac d'Aiguebelette is a quiet, peaceful paradise in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It's 60 km from the metropolis of Grenoble and around 90 km from the Swiss border. And to top it all off, it's just 15 km from Chambéry and therefore only 30 minutes from our La Bruyère campsite. Here's a guide to help you plan your trip to this wonderful place.

Savoie's unique natural heritage

This is one of the best nature destinations in the heart of Savoie. But more than that, it's a site with a preserved ecosystem, rich in biodiversity and an exceptional historical heritage. Here are its characteristics:

  • Nestled at an altitude of 373 metres

  • Depths of up to 71 metres

  • 14 km of idyllic shores

  • France's 7th largest natural lake (545 hectares).

Lac d'Aiguebelette is a Natura 2000 site and a natural zone of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest (ZNIEFF).

On March 6, 2015, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region adopted the classification of Lac d'Aiguebelette as a Regional Nature Reserve. It thus becomes France's first regional freshwater nature reserve.

It belongs to the De Chambost family and E.D.F., but is open to all visitors, including those from Camping La Bruyère.

Lake Aiguebelette: why go there?

Why not let yourself be seduced by Lac d'Aiguebelette? With its emerald color and calm waters, this jewel of the Savoyard foreland is a true place of tranquility, at the foot of the Montagne de l'Épine.

In the heart of nature, its remarkable ecosystem and protected natural areas are a true escape! Lush aquatic flora and fauna reign supreme.

The wild, unspoilt shores of Lac d'Aiguebelette beckon you for moments ofescape. The small lakeside villages have preserved their authenticity with unrivalled charm, in a flourishing setting.

Activities at the lake

Lac d'Aiguebelette invites you to experience unforgettable moments with family, friends or even on your own. Its waters are recognized as some of the warmest in France. They often reach 28°C in summer. It's the perfect place for bathing enthusiasts. But be careful! You can't swim just anywhere - only on the safe, equipped municipal beaches. These are at Aiguebelette-le-Lac, Nances, Novalaise, Saint-Alban-de-Montbel and Lépin-le-Lac.

But why limit yourself to swimming when you can also explore this idyllic setting on a pedalo ? Motorized navigation is prohibited. This measure, adopted by decree in 1967, guarantees impeccable water quality.

And if you're a keen observer of flora and fauna, you're in for a treat. The lake is home to many species of birds on its islands:

  • Kingfisher
  • Great crested grebe
  • The grey heron
  • Mallard duck
  • The Mute Swan

The waters also serve as a refuge for several species of fish, including the :

  • Lavaret, endemic to the lake
  • Trout
  • Pike
  • Perch
  • Gardon

Amphibians, small mammals and a variety of aquatic insects can also be found here. Connoisseurs can also observe a wealth of aquatic and terrestrial flora. These are just as essential to the preservation of the lake's ecosystem.

For adventurers and thrill-seekers, how about taking to the skies in a hang-glider, or exploring the trails by mountain bike or on foot? Lac d'Aiguebelette is equipped to satisfy all your desires for discovery.
